Sažetak
Northern Adriatic is held to be one of the most productive regions of the generally oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea. Seasonal cycle and long-term variations (1990-2004) in phytoplankton abundance at the Po River delta-Rovinj transect in this region were analyzed in comparison to oceanographic, hydrologic and atmospheric conditions. The largest blooms at this transect occurred in February, March, July and October, and were higher in surface layers and in the western part of the region close to the Po River delta. Large blooms often occurred when the Istrian Coastal Countercurrent (i.e. a southward current indicating the "closure" of the northern Adriatic circulation system) was pronounced. Their appearance was also in relation to surface heat fluxes and Po River discharge rates. Besides, it was found that phytoplankton blooms can float over the northern Adriatic for a long period (up to 30 days ; typical for March) and that very large blooms can appear simultaneously in separate circulation cells with a different species distribution. Mainly, results of our analysis concerning winter blooms will be presented.
