Sažetak
Susak is a small island situated in the North Adriatic Sea, Croatia. Its flat Cretaceous limestone surface is covered by up to 90 m of Quaternary sediments, predominantly by loess and sandy loess. The thickness of the sediments is unique in this area. The aim of this research is to provide a reliable chronological frame and to reconstruct the evolution of loess deposits in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Different protocols, the multiple-aliquot additive dose protocol (MAAD) and single-aliquot regeneration dose protocols (SAR, double SAR), were used to determine the best way for calculating equivalent doses (De). Polymineral fine grain and coarse grain quartz and feldspar material is used for tests and De determination. Quartz was not used for further experiments and measurements, due to feldspar contamination, even after HF etching. The double SAR protocol gave Des which are in agreement with Des from MAAD measurements. Preheat and dose recovery tests were done to confirm the reliability of the double SAR protocol measurements. The dose rate of the sediment, necessary for age calculation, was measured by gamma spectrometry with an HPGe (High-Purity Germanium) N-type coaxial detector in the laboratory. Independent age control is provided by radiocarbon dating. Ar-Ar dating of tephras, which are intercalated in the sediment, is in progress. The first results show that sediment on Susak is a very detailed Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 loess-paleosoil record. The great thickness of the deposit is very likely the result of the vicinity of the source area. The provenance of the material is the river Po plain in northern Italy. During that time, due to the level drop of the Adriatic Sea, quick progradation of alluvial and deltaic deposits towards the east-southeast took place and provided large areas exposed to wind erosion.
