Sažetak
In the central part of Vis Island, in the area of Kostirna village, as part of continuous sequence of Cretaceous limestones and dolomites, quartz deposits are found. Developed as two separate beds, 1-6 meters thick, “ quartz sands” are formed by substitution of carbonate mud and silica. These “ sand” deposits, locally called vora, have been mined "long before the 18th century" because of the characteristic white color. North of Kostrina village numerous evidences of mining activities are found. Mines nearby (Veliki rudnik, Mali rudnik, Špilja od Vore, Rudnik Tor) represent combination of mines and natural karst caves. During mining process, cave objects within limestone have been discovered (e.g. Špilja od Vore mine). The largest object, the Veliki rudnik mine, is a unique winter bat habitat, while the mine Rudnik Tor was used for cattle guarding. All these objects are speleologically and biospeleologically explored and represent cave type localities in Croatia. Vora mines are an exceptionally interesting part of Croatian geoheritage and we are obliged to protect and preserve them. With proper care, they can be used for tourist promotion and educational purposes as well.
