Sažetak
Insects significantly respond to changes in environmental conditions along latitudinal and altitudinal gradient. For a wide variety of plant and animal taxa, species richness decreases with increase of latitude or altitude, but for insects, the literature data on the response to the changes along altitudinal gradients is diverse. Here, we present the variations in carabid species richness, morphology and related traits in forest plots placed along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients of Mt. Učka after one year sampling during 2008. For data collection, we used pitfall traps and hand picking. Majority of entomological researches regarding beetles across Mt. Učka took place at the beginning of 20th century, with exception of additional research in two meadows, in the second half of 20th century. We collected 33 carabid species, and in comparison with literature data have registered 8 new species for this area. Two of them are forest specialists, four are generalists, and two are open field species. According to the Croatian Red list of ground beetles, two species are vulnerable (VU). Species richness is positively correlated with altitude (r=0.6, p=0.09) ranging from 10 to 15 below 1000 m a.s.l and from 16 to 20 species above this height. Latitudinal differences in species richness are less pronounced. The comparative study of species along altitudinal or latitudinal transects may help in understanding the response of both species and communities to climate changes.
