Sažetak
Maintenance of iron homeostasis is of utmost importance for the physiological processes. Local iron deficiency or accumulation in the lung may result in particular respiratory function impairment. The aim of the present study was to compare iron concentration in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of healthy children and children with asthma and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). EBC was collected from 164 children (30 healthy children as a control group, 59 asthmatic and 75 children with GERB) using an EcoScreen condenser. In comparison with control group, both, children with asthma and GERB, respectively, had a statistically significantly lower iron concentration (p<0.0001 and p=0.0017). In comparison to controls, cut-off values of iron concentration were 0.05 μ mol/L in children with asthma (sensitivity 84%, specificity 70%, AUC 0.805, p=0, 0001) and 0.06 μ mol/L in children with GERB (sensitivity=67%, specificity=70%, AUC=0.697, p=0, 0010).This preliminary study demonstrated the pathophysiology of asthma and GERD in children to be associated with alterations in iron homeostasis. Additional studies of iron concentration as well as proteins needed for particular iron metabolic pathway (e.g., ferritin, transferrin, lactoferrin, etc.), are fully justified.
