Sažetak
So far little has been known about the Roman limes in the Croatian Danube region because there hasn't been any systematic archaeological excavations in this area that would shed more light on this subject matter. However, lately our knowledge about military units and their positions at the Roman borderline in this part of Pannonia has significantly improved. Information acquired in a big and thorough field survey, also through analysis of aerial photos and of some stray archaeological finds improved our notions about military units and their castra. A castrum at the dominant position near the Danube has been located in the region of Sotin (Cornacum), an unexplored archaeological site near Vukovar. Great amount of different types of Roman arms and military equipment has been discovered at this site as well as several epigraphic finds mentioning different military units including previously unknown Roman military diploma. Analysis of the archaeological finds from Sotin made possible locating the civilian settlement, direction of its spreading, main urbanistic phases, and time of its destruction in Late Antiquity. Epigraphic and archaeological finds that can be useful in the study of the Roman limes were discovered at several sites in Baranja. Aerial photos point that Roman military camp might have been situated in Popovac (Antiana), 5 km from Beli Manastir. Remains of a Roman road about 10 km long are visible south of the camp, spreading towards Hungarian town of Pécs (Sopianae).
