Sažetak
Reception of German language children's literature, namely German language fairy tales, in the multilingual and multicultural 19th century Croatian society will be discussed from several different aspects. First it will be discussed from the point of view of the history of reading i. e. in the context of children's consumption of German language children's books in 19th century Croatia. After that it will be discussed from the book history perspective or at the level of adoption of German language children's literature publishing genres and strategies in the publishing field of 19th century Croatian children's literature. Fairy tales domination in some of the first luxury illustrated Croatian children's books and picture books will be interpreted in this vein. At last, reception of German language children's literature in Croatia will be discussed from the literary history point of view as a history of translations. Almost absolute lack of named German folk tales translations, relatively late named translations of Grimm's and Bechstein's tales as well as a renaming declaratively German folk tales in a Slavic folk tales will be analyzed regarding to the mutually dependent and contradictory ideas of nation, literature, folk and childhood.
