Sažetak
To estimate the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis/rhinoconjuctivitis and atopic eczema symptoms in the Medjimurje-Cakovec County in Northwest Croatia. This study was performed regionally because Croatia consists of many geographically different parts which differ in climate and vegetation, and also in socioeconomics conditions. The study was undertaken between January and April 2005 among the 7-9 and 12-14-year-old school children in 27 randomly selected elementary schools. Data were collected using standardized ISAAC written questionnaire. A total of 6217 children participated in the study from the two age groups (7-9 yrs and 12-14 yrs). In younger group there were 3106 participating children (response rate 96.94%) and in older group 3111 participating children (response rate 94.33%). In younger group 22.9% of the children had symptoms of allergic diseases at some time in their life and in older group 27.6% of children. Estimated lifetime (ever) prevalence rates of symptoms were: wheezing 14.91% and 11.86%, allergic rhinitis symptoms 8.88% and 12.21%, and atopic dermatitis symptoms 10.66% and 7.01%, for younger and older age group respectively. Estimated 12-month prevalence rates were: wheezing 6.92% and 5.11%, allergic rhinitis symptoms 8.40% and 10.87%, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis 4.67% and 7.14%, and atopic dermatitis symptoms 5.76% and 5.34%, for younger and older age group respectively. The results of this study show that Croatia is a country with moderate prevalence of atopic diseases among the pediatric population. Compared with previous studies conducted in Croatia using similar methods, the prevalence of asthma and atopic dermatitis symptoms are in the same range, and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis is lower than in Primorsko-Goranska County placed in Northern Adriatic.
