Sažetak
The rapid development of various media communication technologies over the last two decades has led to the rise of theories concerning the democratic potentials that new media have and the possible emergence of electronic, cyber or digital democracy (Rheingold, 1993). Such expectations usually draw upon the interactive characteristics of the Internet as: the wealth of diverse contents offered by the net ; the possibilities for effect and immediate feedback ; the opportunities of small interest groups and individuals to represent their opinions and connecting to each other etc. Shortly, in these cases we deal with the idea of participatory democracy or cyber-democracy enabled by the Internet, that change traditional concepts of the public sphere (Poster, 1995). However, there are considerable commercial efforts developing within the public spheres enabled by new media. From this perspective, virtual space created by new digital technologies allows various commercial and advertising practices with a final tendency to “ crack the consumer code” (Turow, 2003). The future of new media potentials is still under great doubt: does it lead toward further commercialization of the Internet, already announced by some of leading figures within media industry (R. Murdoch), or will it become a platform for free sharing of various common contents by its users based on social networks created through “ web 2.0” models (Youtube, Facebook, MySpace)?
