Sažetak
N vitro fertilization is undoubtedly one of the most important achievements of medical science in the last decades. The question of whether manipulation of the human egg and sperm will cause them damage has always been of high priority for biologist and clinicians advancing the field of IVF. Women who undergo IVF to achieve pregnancy are more likely to face adverse pregnancy outcome, such as preeclampsia and placental abnormalities than women who spontaneously conceive. A significant risk of ART is multiple pregnancy and include higher rate of perinatal mortality, preterm birth, low birth weight, gestational hypertension, placental abruption and placenta previa. It is unclear whether these adverse outcomes are caused by the actual ART treatments or the underlying cause of the infertility itself. Some studies suggest a link between ART and chromosome abnormalities, low birth weight, preterm delivery, birth defects and number of other dangerous conditions. Pregnancies achieved by IVF with or without ICSI are at higher risk for obstetrical and perinatal complications and close surveillance during pregnancy should be considered. Women undergoing ART should be informed about the increased rate of obstetrical interventions such as induced labor or caesarean section. Although there are additional risks associated with ART therapy the researches stated that » chances of having healthy child through ART are overall extremely high«
