Sažetak
The objective of this paper is to use the example of the Danube basin to point out the importance of international cooperation as a basic prerequisite for a more efficient water resources management based on the principles of sustainable development. Many geographic and hydrological data concerning the Danube basin and river, an important basis for water resources management, are presented. It also points to the existence of processes with a negative influence on water quality and quantity. They all represent a real danger because they can initiate a water crisis with very severe consequences soon. International co-operation and its drawbacks and a need to form new concepts are described. New common principles for future cooperation are proposed.
