Sažetak
The paper analyzes a wide range of minority protection issues, addressing the role minority protection requirements played in the preparation of the recent enlargement of the European Union, the likely applications of minority protection conditionality in the preparation of the enlargements to come, and the place occupied by minority protection at the European level of governance at large. Having seen a number of contradictory developments with positive as well as negative implications, minority protection as promoted by the European Union is often presented more as a myth than a reality of integration. How come such an important aspect of human rights protection found only a limited reflection on the human rights agenda of the polity sui generis? By addressing a range of developments in both the new and the old Member States as well as in the candidate countries, the paper offers curious insights in the way the EU minority protection requirements evolved up to now and in their place in the European Union of the future: its substance, legal basis and application. Will the myth come true or will the reality turn out to be a myth?
