Feeding and nutritional values of the sparid fish Sarpa salpa L. in the southern Adriatic (Croatia)
Background and purpose: Salema, Sarpa salpa. L., is a sparid fish. The data on S. salpa nutritional value relative to their feeding habits are rather scarce thus the objective of this paper was to assess nutritional values of different age groups of this fish species in dependence on their feeding habits.
Materials and methods: In our investigations 30 wild fish of three age groups: 0+, 1+ and 2+ were examined (n = 10 for each age-group). Digestive system contents were diluted in distilled water prior to microscopic examination of contents. To obtain basic chemical composition, the whole fish were homogenized prior to determining the quantities of protein, lipid, ash and moisture. Determinations were undertaken by using standard laboratory methods.
Results: The analysis of intestinal tract contents comprised 6 macrophytic and 35 microphytic species belonging to the following groups: Cyanophyta (5 species - or 12.2%), Dinoflagellatae (1 species - or 2.4%), Chrysophyta (Bacillariophyceae 28 species - or 68.3%; Haptophyceae 1 species - or 2.4%), Chlorophyta (4 species - or 9.8%) and Rhodophyta (2 species - or 4.9%). With the age group 0+ detritus was the dominant food item (relative contribution up to 90%) and with the age groups 1+ and 2+ benthic algae were found along with the planktonic diatoms. The obtained results reveal that the Sarpa salpa of the investigated age groups feed mainly on detritus, plankton and benthic algae. The analysis of chemical composition of proteins, lipids, water and ash was made to determine the nutritive value of the salema. During the investigation, the following values were found: proteins from 17.57 % to 20.51 %; lipids - from 3.72 % to 4.48 %; ash - from 3.78 % to 4.93 % and moisture - from 71.20 % to 73.48 %. Total energetic values, ranging from 452.78 kJ (age-group 0+) to 526.15 kJ (age-group 1+) were in the proportion of the values found for proteins and lipids.
