Sažetak
This work analyzes several aspects of the late medieval narrative entitled Voyage to Saint Patrick’ s Purgatory that Ramon de Perellos kept as a kind of travel diary of his journey to a mystical site in medieval Ireland. The text of the Voyage to Saint Patrick’ s Purgatory is an interesting document in its own right because it combines the literary conventions of the time with the personal experiences of the author. The intention here is to use this account as a basis for demonstrating how intertextuality was an important feature of medieval texts as well as to indicate the problems that confront those who attempt to distinguish between facts and fiction in medieval texts. Also the aim is to show how difficult it is to assign the Voyage to any particular medieval literary genre because it combines the elements of a pilgrimage with an adventure story, an itinerary-diary with an account of a mystical medieval vision, and other details that may well be historically accurate. All these problems make the Voyage impervious to any easy solutions or dogmatic assumptions.
