Sažetak
Tourism is very dynamic phenomenon that should constantly adapt to changes that are results of the potential tourists´ requirements. However, no matter how much is important for tourism to meet its customer’ s requirements, it is important to meet requirements of the surroundings where it takes place as well. Therefore, actual discussions about tourism development point out the importance of sustainable tourism development where requirements of tourists and local population and economic growth are going to be satisfied at the same time. Islands, as very sensitive natural units are specially exposed to influences and changes which tourism has brought. One of such example is the island of Hvar where the beginnings of the organized tourism were registered 140 years ago. From the middle of the 20th century, the number of tourists began to grow at a rapid rate, especially in the last six years. The main purpose of this paper is to find the answers on the following questions: 1. to what extent the tourism development affects today the life of local population and the transformation of the island as a whole ; 2. can we talk about future sustainable tourism development on this island because it has already experienced significant transformations till now ; 3. concerning this situation, how to plan future tourism development where all economic, ecological and social criterion of the sustainable development on the island of Hvar could be satisfied at the same time. The paper presents the results of the exploratory research which examined the literature concerning sustainable tourism, WCED papers, the Central Bureau of Statistics – First Release, Worldwide Destinations guide, and many data gathered from the world organizations web pages.
