Sažetak
We argue that the position of the main verb interacts with the possibility for ellipsis in second conjuncts. No phrase can be deleted in the c-command domain of an overt verb at s- structure (Head Condition, Wilder (1997)). This account assumes that the phrase to be deleted has to be in the same position in its conjunct as its antecedent in the first conjunct (Structural Parallelism). If a deleted object in the second conjunct could have moved to a pre-verbal position before deleting, it could avoid the Head Condition, and the example should be well formed. As predicted, in an OV language like German the deletion of objects is only blocked by verbs that have undergone V2, hence c-command the objects.
