Sažetak
The objective of the study was to examine multiple sclerosis (MS) cluster in Gorski Kotar (Croatia) and Kočevje (Slovenija) regions. In this area (population 43 045 inhabitans) 64 MS patients with clinically definite and laboratory supported definite MS (Poser's criteria) were identified. The prevalence rate of MS on June 1st 1999 was 148.6/100000, which is significantly higher than those found in Rijeka, Croatia (35.6/100000) and Slovenia populations (89.2/100000). Familial occurence of the disease found in 7 families showed high familial recurrence rate 28.1%. Genetic analysis based on the allele frequencies of 3 polymorphic genetic markers on Y chromosome (DYS 391, DYS 392 and DYS 393) indicated that the genetic structure of population differed significantly from populations in Croatia and Slovenia, but it was very similiar with that found in German population. The results confirmed that the possible main reason for MS cluster in Gorski Kotar and Kočevje regions was the difference in genetic structure of population.
