Sažetak
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among various subjective age measures and between these age measures and some health variables, life satisfaction and general happiness. Subjective age has long been hypothesized to be a more accurate reflection of how young or old a person is than chronological age. In this study three categories of subjective age identifications were measured: cognitive age (feel-age, look-age, do-age, interest-age), desired age and comparative or relative age (perceived age in comparison with some normative group). Subjects were 118 health care professionals. They were administered Subjective Age Questionnaire, which was developed for this purpose, Physical Health Questionnaire with the Digestive (8 items), Cardiovascular (8 items) and Musculo-Skeletal (4-items) subscales, Life Satisfaction scale (5 items scored on a 6-point Likert scale) and Fordayce Emotions Questionnaire. The relationships between different subjective age measures, after controlling for the actual (chronological) age showed that four categories of cognitive age and comparative age were positively interrelated, but not related to the desired age. Desired age was strongly related to the chronological age, the older the person is the younger he/she wants to be. The younger self-perceptions (i.e., greater discrepancy between chronological and subjective age) were associated with fewer health complaints, higher general happiness, but not with the life satisfaction.
