Sažetak
The study was aimed at evaluating participation of persons aged 60 and over in the labour force of the Republic of Croatia, as well as gathering information on workers' expectations about duration of their working period and preparedness for retirement.
The paper gives some statistical data on the labour force participation rates for persons aged 60 and over and data on population of retirees in the Republic of Croatia. The retirees are defined as persons receiving employment-related pensions or disability pension (withdrawal from the labour force for health reasons). The data are based on the administrative records of the Republic Fund of Retirement and Disability Insurance of the Republic of Croatia, Republic Fund of Health and Social Insurance of the Republic of Croatia and Republic Bureau for Statistics.
The data show:
a) labour force participation rates for age cohorts 60 years and older (five-year cohorts) by sex for the year 1991
b) participation of retirees in the total population and in the labour force for the period 1961-1991;
c) age and sex structure of the population of retirees for 1981 and 1990
The anticipation of retirement was examined by means of a questionnaire administered to a total of 339 employees of both sexes, of different age and different educational level. Questions covered various aspects of retirement anticipation: continuity-discontinuity of life-cycle, leisure activities, possible social exclusion, preferred age of retirement, lifestyle changes accompanying retirement etc.
Compared with lower educated people, people with higher level of education would more often continue their jobs irrespective of their age, and more often expect social exclusion after retirement. The reported ideal age for retirement was significantly higher in the educated workers, although in both groups it was lower than the mandatory age for retirement. In comparison to men, women felt less anxious when thinking about being retired and were less likely to continue their jobs irrespective of their age.
