Sažetak
Indicators of stroke epidemiology (MU) in Croatia are mostly based on data from Croatian Public Health Institute. The latest data show that MU is the second leading cause of death in Croatia and causes death in 15, 7 percent of cases, what makes 8154 deceased annually. In comparison to previous years, mortality caused by MU has been slowly reducing, what is partially a result of preventive check-ups for people older than fifty, which were initiated by the Ministry of Health. In the last few years there have been several population neuroepidemiological studies, which have shown high rates of incidence and prevalence of this decease in population. It is not possible to influence some of these factors, like age, gender and genetic inheritance, but it is possible to reduce risk with a healthier life style. It is possible to reduce risk of stroke by influencing the factors like unhealthy diet, stress, physical inactivity, fatness, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking, increased blood pressure, diabetes and increased cholesterol. Croatian Association of Neurovascular Disorders of Croatian Medical Association and Croatian Association for Stroke Prevention published guidelines for taking care of patients who had a stroke. National project of taking care of patients who had a stroke has been implemented in the Republic of Croatia in the past few years. Final result of these activities should be reducing morbidity and mortality caused by this illness, improving short-term outcome, improving life quality and reducing total social and economic burden of this decease for the whole community.
