Sažetak
Strategically the Republic of Croatia should be orientated towards exploiting its comparative advantages, which are, at the current level of development, particularly noticeable in the domain of highly educated workforce, as this labour is several times cheaper than equivalent labour in developed economies of the world. In view of important evolutionary processes in digital technology, and rejecting on objective grounds any significant participation in developing hardware components in the domain of computer science, Croatia can assume an important role in the development and application of technologies in the domain of information sciences. In this modern information age information management is a key to ensuring information superiority as a significant aspect of business success. Apart from providing expert knowledge on information management through vertical component of education, it is also necessary in modern turbulent conditions to ensure a permanent horizontal component of education. Using a modular approach, the latter component will provide continuous applicable insights in accordance with the interests and needs of programme participants, following the principle of life-long learning in the modern knowledge society. As it was necessary to create a rational framework for implementing a horizontal educational component, the Faculty of Economics in Osijek started developing a conceptual model of specialist postgraduate studies of information management which provides the horizontal educational component through modules, and creates prerequisites for conducting life-long education.
