Sažetak
This paper explores the contemporary phenomenon of global/American culture and its role in Europe, with special reference to the challenges faced by the developing countries of South-eastern Europe. The second part of this paper addresses the importance of language in globalisation processes and identity construction. The impact of globalisation in Croatia is seen as a model of the similar processes in other parts of South-eastern Europe. Two interrelated questions dominate the debate: 1. Globalisation seen as a gateway to the free world and new technology. 2. Globalisation seen as a threat to cultural and national identity. This dispute leads to the common conclusion that globality is neither an inherently good nor an inherently bad thing. Every nation needs to find its unique way to modernity and new identity. At the end a more balanced partnership is recommended between the leading nations associated with globalisation and developing countries.
