Sažetak
The paper examines the role of UNESCO in the creation, application and development of international legal rules and the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict. The main part of the analysis is related to UNESCO’ s relation with the most important convention in this field: the1954 Hague Convention for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict and its two protocols. The historical development of international legal rules on this particular problem is presented, as well as recent novelties relating to the international prosecution of crimes against cultural property and the possible actions which UNESCO can take in this context. The author also analyzes the relation between UNESCO and other international legal instruments and organizations dealing with the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict.
