Sažetak
The National Strategy for Prevention of Family Violence of the Croatian Government (2008-2010) is the second strategic document addressing the prevention and reduction of all forms of family violence. The relevant international documents (e.g. Convention on the Rights of a Child ; UN Declaration on elimination of Violence Against Women, 1993 ; The Bejing Platform, 1995 ; Recommendations of the Council of Ministers of Council of Europe, 2002) as well as the experiences from the implementation of the first National Strategy (2005-2007) served to make the new document operational and strong platform for addressing family violence. Protection of children from abuse and neglect has the special focus in the National Strategy. The data show that children and youth have been victims in 27% of cases of family violence reported by the police. The increase of about 10% of reported cases of family violence is probably a reflection of the more effective community response, but also of the growing violence in families living in the post-war and transitional social context. In order to achieve the goals of the National Strategy, 49 short- and long-term specific measures have been designed. A selection of these measures most relevant for prevention and reduction of child abuse will be presented, together with their evidence-based framework. Among these, the concept, contents and procedures of the psychosocial treatment of perpetrators of family violence will be described in more detail and experiences with its implementation within the National Strategy will be discussed.
