Sažetak
ASP (amnesic shellfish poisoning) investigation of shellfish samples from Croatian breeding farms from 2005 to 2008 indicates rare evidence of domoic acid. In 2000 Croatia initiated a monitoring programme of breeding areas in accordance with EU Directives. Monitoring program includes seawater analysis for the presence of toxic phytoplankton species and shellfish analysis for the presence of algal toxins. In the frame of this monitoring there is research of ASP, started in 2005. Determination ASP toxins in shellfish are associated with intensive bloom of diatom Pseudo-nitzschia spp. According to Croatian legislations and Regulation (EC) No 853/2004, shellfish must not contain ASP in total quantities that exceed the limits: 20 mg/kg . The method for ASP determination follows the procedure proposed by Quilliam et.al.1995 [1]. Domoic acid and isomers are extracted with methanol-water solution and determined by HPLC measurement of a final extract. Preparing samples should be analysed as soon as possible, because isomerisation of domoic acid (C5'-epi- domoic acid and isodomoic acids). Domoic acid is determined in shellfish samples from middle and north Adriatic. Obtained results are under the maximum permitted levels, so shellfish consumption doesn't endanger human health.
