Sažetak
The aim of this presentation is to tell the story about the nature of women's frame of mind and the motivation of her behavior as well as about the position of women in general in Dubrovnik Republic. The fate of women was defined by their gender, historical parameters, mentality, the local setting, and their status in the family within the urban and rural social environment. Woman's position was essentially a domestic one, limited by the walls of her household. She was a housewife, wife and caring mother, offered spiritual guidance, healed etc. Women socialized mainly out in the street or on their way to church, coming home from Mass, after sermon or confession. Each appearance in public put the woman in a position to have to bear her the consequences of this outing into the world. This scenario included labour scenes with working women eager to realize their life goals in the activities outside their households, although in terms of employment they held the bottom position on the labour market, being well underpaid for their work. Medieval societies incorporated individuals into a multi-level system of communities. Among the groups that framed the life of medieval man, the first place belonged to the family, which in Dubrovnik Republic was presented in three structural types, simple, extended and complex. Simple-structure family was relatively more frequent among the members of lower social circles, among people that lived of their profession, not of any inherited property. A complex family, the social ideal of the upper class, is more typical for the social circles whose existence was primarily connected with landowning, i.e. farmers, as well as patricians and rich merchants. The woman's position in a noble family was practically reduced to the reproductive level, whilst among the commonalty, rural or urban, the role of the family's women in contributing to the household was equal of that of men, irrespective to the great difference between sexes in terms of power and influence. A noblewoman was destined for very early marriage, short confinement intervals and numerous births. The ideal concept of marriage and bending to strict moral norms in wedlock usually followed a wild and reckless premarital period that was reserved for males only. The marginal groups, city paupers, were subject to high mortality caused by malnutrition and inadequate living conditions. Among the foundlings the number of births and birth spacing also proved to be high, which counterbalanced the group's high infant mortality. The periods of crisis were also marked by more serious violations of moral norms and sexual overindulgence. Despite all the limitations, women found ways towards their own fulfillment, rejecting the idea of confinement and feeling of restriction. Cvijeta Zuzorić and Anica Bošković were just two from the group of exceptional woman form a period of Dubrovnik Republic, as Marija Giorgi Bona wrote in a letter to her daughter (18th century): “ The wealth and the nobility, the power and the beauty, are all worthless without the knowledge... beacuse educated girl is lauded even in the old age, and memory of her does not perish even after her death.”
