Sažetak
After the introduction of recombinant DNA technology in 1973, the appearance of modern biotechnology in the eighties was vigorous in the developed countries with implication in science, technology, economy, society, politics and legislation. The rise of biotechnology and the convergence of academic research and market place offer excellent future opportunities. Innovative new product discovery is a key strategy for long-term survival in many industries, in drugs development, agriculture and environment protection. In the biotechnology enterprise in Croatia is to succeed on the long-term basis, a unifying policy established on well-defined objective is necessary. Biotechnology deserves major governmental and industrial funding, and the research objectives must be made comprehensible to the public. From the viewpoint of scientists, the obtaining of adequate information is essential for making a proper judgement. Implanting faith and trust in the knowledge and judgement of specialists in this field, engaged in politics, economics, and the improvement of social conditions will conduct impartial assessments and bring to agreements about future directions in research for Croatia. We hope that the information on these pages will benefit individuals as well as readers in other disciplines by allowing a greater understanding of the challenges facing biotechnology.
