Sažetak
The Southeastern Europe, as a part of wider Mediterranean region, has always represented a sphere of NATO's vital interest. In times when the Alliance was being conceived the geostrategical interest of containing the further spread of Soviet Union was prevailing and this led to inclusion of some Mediterranean countries which were not fully compatible with the original idea of Atlantism (Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey). In times of bi-polarism and Cold War the south east of Europe was sharing the destiny of the whole Mediterranean.
