Sažetak
Purpose: Standardization of natural products is one of the key objectives for assuring quality and necessity for registration as medicinal products. During the last two years we have developed procedures for standardization of propolis tinctures from Croatia. Before setting the limits to be used in certificate of analysis we wanted to check weather propolis of other than Croatian origin will pass the quality control tests for content of polyphenolics as these are major pharmacologically active substances. Methods: For the identification and quantification of individual polyphenolic TLC densitometry in situ was used. Total content of flavonoids was determined using Christ-Müller’ s method and phenolic acids were determined according to European Pharmacopoeia. Results: Chrysin, caffeic and p-coumaric acid were identified and determined in Croatian propolis. None of the 14 polyphenolics analysed was identified in Brazilian sample. Total content of flavonoids was cca. 40 times grater while the content of phenolic acids was cca. 6 times lower in Croatian compared to Brazilian propolis. Conclusion: Simple application of standardized procedures for Croatian propolis is not possible for propolis samples of different origin. The results indicate that qualitative and quantitative content of active substances is significantly different between Croatian and Brazilian propolis.
