Sažetak
Study results of the length and age population structure of sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walb.) are presented in this paper, as well as its growth, length-weight relationship, fluctuations of allometric coefficient, catches and stock size during the period from 1975 to 2008. Length frequency distribution polygons were mostly unimodal, even though they were polymodal as well. Mean values varied between 14.4± ; 1.118 cm (2004) and 16± ; 0.970 cm (1998). Age range was between 0 and 8+. During the investigation period, the age structure of sardine has changed immensely, as well as the allometric coefficient – from negative allometry, isometry and positive allometry. Population density was the most pronounced during autumn and winter, and the least in spring and summer. Catches of this important species have varied depending on the estimated stock size. The estimated amounts of stock size, as well as the catches, were the smallest in the last ten years (1998-2007). They were one tenth of the mid 1980’ s amounts.
