Sažetak
PURPOSE: This study is directed to examination of handwriting in person with aphasia caused by meningoencephalitis, and also to the importance of appropriate and continued speech and language therapy. METHODS:It is known that a comprehensive assessment of writing includes examination of spontaneous writing, written naming, writing to dictation, and copying. Some tasks (10) from writing subtest of BDAE (Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination)were used for the purpose of this research. These tasks were translated and adjusted to Croatian language. J.K., a 26 old, right handed male with a medical history of meningoencephalitis (lesion in the area of middle cerebral peduncle right, parietooccipital, and frontotemporal left) was the subject of the current study. Because of the patient's bad general condition first speech and language assessment was made in forth month of his staying in the hospital. According to BDAE he had Global Aphasia. After this, he had speech therapy twice on a week for two months and then he continud the therapy every day for next four months. Diagnostic assessment was repeated after six months and he had Broca’ s aphasia. RESULTS: In the second assessment, during writing J.K. repeated every word a few times and controlled himself in that way. It allowed him to notice his mistakes and he tried to correct them. Most often, these attempts resulted with letter additions, substitutions and omissions in writing exercises. CONCLUSION: Based on obtained results and according to some earlier research' findings from literature we can mak conclusion that J.K. probably has graphemic buffer impairment. As a highly sophisticated skill, effective writing integrate lot of cognitive, linguistic and perceptual-motoric processes. A good planed therapy, individual approach and detailed assessment of writing is needed to get, as much as possible, insights in processes and mechanisms of impaired writing, but insights in preserved ones also.
