Sažetak
Systematic work on cultural events and entertainment for the needs of the local population and tourism began in Istria – Novigrad included – at the end of the 1990s. At that time, new municipalities were established and they in turn founded new cultural institutions and monitored their work. Another reason for the flourishing of culture and entertainment was the greater involvement of Tourism Boards in organizing and/or monitoring cultural events, as part of the programme "Development of Cultural Tourism". As a consequence, some contents, such as pop-rock music played on terraces disappeared. However, entertainment of this kind can still be found in hotels and camping sites. Nowadays, in terms of culture and entertainment, small seaside resorts offer everything that can be found elsewhere in the world: classical music concerts, museums, exhibitions, cinema, pop-rock concerts, ballet, opera, festivals: gastronomic events, luna-fest, wine and food fairs, music nights, Slovenian nights, street artists .... The intention of this paper is to show the importance of traditional events – i.e. "Fishermen's nights" - by using the locality of Novigrad (Croatia) as an example. Other "fishermen's" fairs, e.g. the "Ribarska fešta" in Rovinj (Croatia) shall be illustrated as a means of comparison. In presenting fishermen's fairs (evenings, nights..) the authors shall describe the historical background, the food offered, the characteristics of the event and the music and one of the essential components of folk and fishermens' feasts. Throughout the summer, music plays an important role in the tourism offer of Istrian seaside resorts. The authors bring examples of music-related events in the chosen locality of Novigrad. However, is that the kind of music that meets the tourists' expectations? Nowadays, music in tourism is no longer merely a soundtrack for the tourists' experiences, but is and must be a significant part of the entire experience. It can either be part of the tradition of the given locality, or "atmosphere music" accompanying a cultural event.
