Sažetak
Aphasia, the result of neurological damage most often caused by stroke, affects various aspects of speech and language functions. The relations between aphasic impairments and, consequently, different speech and language functions are multiple and depend on the type and severity of a particular impairment. These relations imply various degree of independence of different speech and language functions. The aim of this paper was to investigate the speed of access to mental lexicon in subjects with various types of aphasia and controls with no neurological damage and to determine the difference that occurs: a) depending on the type of response (auditory recognition task and picture naming task), b) depending on the type of language material (nouns and verbs), c) depending on the type of aphasic impairment and d) depnding on different tasks performed by the aphasic subjects and healthy controls. A group of 20 aphasic patients and 20 healthy subjects matched by age, participated in the research. The aphasic patients are neurologically treated and included in speech therapy in SUVAG Polyclinic in Zagreb, Croatia. The access to mental lexicon and reaction time of word retrieval were measured by means of picture vocabulary test adopted for the purpose of this research. The adequate statistical analysis was applied to the collected data. The results of this research could be used and helpful in individual speech therapy planning for various patients with aphasic impairments.
