Sažetak
Infrared and Raman spectroscopies, known under the common name vibrational spectroscopy, offer a plenty of valuable information concerning both structure and dynamics of molecules. A bare identification method of known structures is a matter of historical applications of infrared spectroscopy. Extraordinary velocity of vibrational transitions (the order of magnitude ~10E-13 s or ~100 ps) enables following of time dependent minor or even subtle structural changes (e.g. during transformations and/or rearrangements) and makes it possible to observe superposition of a number of different features (e.g. presence of various isomers). Furthermore, an important advantage of infrared spectroscopy is its ability to study efficiently hydrogen bonding and non-bonding interactions in a variety of aggregate states. On the other hand, due to some inherent differences from infrared, Raman spectroscopy offers a whole lot of complementary data to understand better both entitled molecular properties. Tremendous development of new technologies and materials brought about a new generation of instruments for both infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, fascinating possibilities of contemporary software, that we witness in the last decade or so, enable modern science a number of applications of vibrational spectroscopy not only in molecular dimensions but also beyond them. A series of examples from author’ s research experience and other sources will be presented in the lecture.
