Sažetak
With respect to energy supply, most of the islands depend on importation, mainly from oil and its related products, and others are dependent on weak electricity grid connections with mainland. Scarce resources are used inefficiently, supplying end-use energy and other life supporting commodities, like power, heat, cold, transport fuel, water, waste treatment and waste water treatment. Solution may be found in integration of different flows and its combination with use of the renewable energy sources which are usually abundant on islands. By integration of flows we can decrease the energy intensity although the task is situation dependent and involves a large number of different systems, and renewable energy sources as wind, solar and weave energy are intermittent in their nature and higher penetration of these sources in islands energy system is thus limited. Hybrid systems with integrated energy storage provide good solution for both complex tasks. The storage of electricity is feasible in various forms, like reversible hydro‎ , hydrogen or batteries, but those solutions may not be economically viable. On the other hand, by integrating electricity system with other energy systems, like heat, cold, or transport fuel systems, or with other systems, like water supply system, waste treatment system or waste water treatment system, may enable increasing the viability of the entire system, by storing what is most appropriate in a given situation. Energy storage could also provide solution for grid issues which are considered as another major barrier for higher penetration of intermittent energy sources especially in remote or outlying regions, including islands. RenewIslands methodology was developed in order to enable assessment of technical feasibility of various options for integrated energy and resource planning of island. It helps in choosing energy and resource flows integration, based on the island needs, its resources, and the applicable technologies. During the time Renewislands methodology has been upgraded to ADEG methodology for selection and optimization for applications of decentralised energy generation. Methodology has been tested on several islands and in some cases it brings hydrogen as an option for energy vector in islands energy supply. Hydrogen as an energy vector can increase penetration of renewable and intermittent sources and it can serve as energy vector that may allow reaching 100% renewable energy supply of island communities.
