Sažetak
Duration of suitable workability of cement based materials during placement is defined by setting time. The use of adequate set regulators for each application is subject of great practical and financial interest. From the practice, it is known that even a small amount of different organic and inorganic compounds show pronounced influence on setting time of cement materials. In this paper the influence of transition metals in the form of chlorides salts, on the hydration of calcium aluminate cement (Istra 40 manufactured by Istra Cement, Pula, Croatia) had been investigated. The effect has been studied at two temperatures, 14 and 20 oC with a water to cement mass ratio of 0.25 and 0.40. A simple method of analyzing cement hydration based on the measurement of temperature rise of cement pastes is presented. Times of initial and final sets were established from the obtained time-temperature curves. The results of the setting time obtained from the measured temperature rise of cement pastes were compared to the standard Vicat needle measurements. The composition of cement and hydrates formed had been investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Interesting regularity was observed upon plotting the obtained results on setting times vs. atomic number of added cation.
