Sažetak
The objective of investigation was to determine whether non-ionizing irradiation influence the movement, sequestration and clearance of biologicaly inert particles within the rat lung in the phase of subacute exposure. Wistar rats were intratracheally instilled with inert polystyrene particles. Twenty out of 40 animals was irradiated with 2450 MHz, 5 -15 mW/cm2 microwaves 2h/day, 5d/week for 30 days. Five animals per group were sacrificed on 1, 8, 16, and 30 postinstillation day. Free lung cells obtained by the lung lavage were determined by number and type. Cell functionality was assessed through tripan blue exclusion test, phagocytic activities, and phagocytic capacity. Lung and lymph tissue burden was determined microscopically on Nucleopore filters. The indicated group of animals showed a time-dependent decrease in free lung cell population and drop in the share of polymorphonuclear leukocytes on the first day in irradiated animal group, when compared to controls. There were no significant differences in cell viability in both examined groups. Cell phagocytic activty in treated animals was slightly lower through experiment. The smaller quantity of microspheres was obtained from alveolar space of irradiated animals than from controls, except for 30th day of experiment. The microsphere burden in the lung tissue was smaller in treated than the non-treated rats, and a slight time-dependent increase was noted in the irradited group. Opposite to the control, the irradiated group showed an increasing tendency to accumulate particles in the lymph nodes. To conclude, microwaves seem to influence the removal of particles from the lung so that mainly takes the form of physical translocation of particles up the conducting airways, whereas the clearance through lymphatics becomes less significant.
