Sažetak
The paper presents results of a corpus-based case study on time metaphors in English and Croatian. The corpus linguistic approach is combined with contrastive and translational approaches. Methodologically, we use the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Croatian National Corpus (HNK) to find as many expressions of time metaphors in English and Croatian as we can. The English expressions of time metaphors found in the BNC are then contrasted with the parallel Croatian expressions found in the HNK, in order to establish the equivalences and differences on the level of language systems. By attempting to account for possible differences we expect to contribute to the issue of universality and variation of metaphors across languages and cultures. After that, we examine how these metaphoric expressions are translated from English into Croatian to see whether the translators make use of the possibilities given in the language system. The findings are relevant to cognitive linguistics, as well as to contrastive linguistics and translation studies.
