Sažetak
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are Persistent Organic Pollutants. Mussels are good bioindicators of pollution due to the ability to filter the sea water and accumulate contaminants. They are also good geographical bioindicators because of their wide geographic distribution and weak mobility. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of 17 PCB congeners and 7 OCPs in the edible tissue of the Mediterranean blue mussel (lat. Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected at 14 sampling sites along the Croatian Adriatic coast. Mussels were collected from natural populations at 14 sampling sites in March 2006 and prepared as lyophilisate. Lyophilisate was mixed with sodium sulphate in a glass mortar and extracted twice with n-hexane. The extract was evaporated to dryness, and lipid residues were dissolved in n-hexane and cleaned up twice with sulphuric acid. The analysis was done on two high resolution gas chromatographs with electron capture detector(s) (HRGC/ECD) altogether on three capillary columns. Seventeen PCB congeners were analysed: PCB-28, PCB-52, PCB-101, PCB-138, PCB-153, PCB-180, PCB-105, PCB-114, PCB-118, PCB-123, PCB-156, PCB-157, PCB-167, PCB-170, PCB-189, PCB-60, and PCB-74 (numbered according to IUPAC) and OCPs: hexachlorobenzene (HCB), α -HCH, β -HCH, γ -HCH (α -, β -, γ -hexachlorocyclohexanes), 1, 1-dichloro-2, 2-di(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE), 1, 1-dichloro-2, 2-di(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDD) and 1, 1, 1-trichloro-2, 2-di(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT). All analysed OCPs were found in all samples in the range between 0.08 ng/g dry wt for α -HCH and 14.3 ng/g dry wt for DDT. At all sampling sites DDT and DDE were present at the highest levels, followed by high levels of DDD and β -HCH at almost all sites. They exceeded 1 ng/g dry wt while the levels of other OCPs were below 1 ng/g dry wt. PCBs were also found at all sampling sites, except for PCB-157 and PCB-189, which were found at 10 and 3 sampling sites, respectively. In positive samples, PCB concentrations ranged between 0.16 ng/g dry wt and 20.5 ng/g dry wt. The concentration range of the sum of six indicator PCBs was between 7 and 74.4 ng/g dry wt, while the sum of the remaining 11 PCBs ranged between 3.4 and 37.5 ng/g dry wt. One sampling site is distinguished by the highest levels of PCBs, DDT, DDE, DDD, and β -HCH.
