Sažetak
The theme of LITTORAL 2000 is "Responsible Coastal Zone Management The Challenge of the 21st Century" with following sub-themes: 1. Environmental Assessment 2. Responsible Use of Natural Resources 3. Coastal Engineering 4. Financing Sustainable Coastal Development 5. National and International Legal Aspects One of the conference focal point is the importance of integrated management of coastal zone in which special attention should be paid to preserved, economically and ecologically valuable and touristically appealing coastal zone with islands and surrounding submarine area. The negative impact of uncontrolled urban, industrial and touristic development and the lack of appropriate environmental strategies are now becoming very evident. The massive occupation of the coastline and the discharge and dumping of large amounts of solid and liquid wastes into the sea together with the over exploitation of natural resources, constitute a threat to the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity, to the survival of its species and to the conservation of several sites of high natural value. International co-operation, information and knowledge exchange between scientists and experts from different countries and regions and, even more, their joint actions in coastal zone management and protection are the strongest answer to all raising questions and challenges. In that way I expect this conference to be successful and fruitful. Over 100 papers were received from more than 24 countries and many top experts have been invited as speakers. Although the EUROCOAST aim is to provide a network for scientific and technical exchange on the subjects relating mainly to the European coastal zone, I am proud to welcomes many contributors from different countries all around the world. The sea with its problems and issues is the common heritage of all mankind.
