Sažetak
Rising global demand for seafood and declining catches have resulted in the volume of mariculture doubling each decade, a growth expected by the FAO to persist in the decades to come. This growth should use technologies with economical and environmental sustainability. Feed accounts for about half the cost in current high-volume fed monospecies aquaculture, yet most of this feed becomes waste. Nutrient-rich effluents cause rising concern due to eutrophication of coastal waters. Integrated mariculture uses the excess nutrients to diversify the fish farm's products and provides a more efficient use of resources. Research has shown that the sea urchin Psammechinus miliaris thrives well in open-water integrated aquaculture alongside Atlantic salmon. Salmon feed has a high protein and lipid content and studies on P. miliaris have shown that this food type increases both somatic and gonadal growth. Paracentrotus lividus is the most commonly consumed sea urchin in Europe. It is widely distributed along the Adriatic coast, however it is still not recognized as a potential mariculture species. Today's technologies are generic, modular and adaptable for several culture combinations of fish and shellfish along with sea urchin. The objective of this paper is to review the possibility of integrated culture of P. lividus as a novel candidate in Croatian mariculture
