Sažetak
Among the many benefits that could be allocated to bioenergy, such as sustainability, carbon dioxide neutrality, availability and controllable supply, also the factors increased employment and earnings in rural areas should be mentioned. In the political vocabulary it is expressed as creation of jobs, the economists and planners talk of income formation and employment. New job openings, especially in the coastal zone and on islands are one of imperatives of the Croatian economic and social policies. Islands are a great treasure and special value in Croatia. At the moment their potential are being poorly made use of, their originality insufficiently protected, their opportunities not encouraged or even discouraged. Utilising biomass energy potential yields multiple benefits: it not only enables energy production with minimal environmental impact, but it also offers considerable possibilities for more job openings and can positively affect local and national economy, which has been recognised as one of major advantages of the BIOEN National Energy Programme. Preliminary results show that energy production from biomass could offer approximately 5000 new jobs in the year 2020 in total in Croatia. When considering biomass utilization for energy production for Croatian islands the most interesting are following systems, which also can considerable contribute in achieving number of different socio-economic benefits: - Olive-oil refinery waste fired small cogeneration and heating systems (as additional fuel all other biomass types can be used), - Biogas production from waste waters, - Utilization of forestry waste and wooden mass from areas destroyed by forest fires.
