Sažetak
Centric diatom communities were studied in a few dozen of different lakes in Croatia, Romania and Spain during the last years in bilateral projects. Several lakes are situated on protected areas, National Parks, Natura 2000 sites. The aim of these investigations was first to determine of centric diatom communities of lakes, then to analyse the species composition from a nature conservation point of view. Several lakes were never investigated for centric diatoms, therefore several new species were found for the algal flora of the given country, and one new species for the science (Cyclotella hispanica, described from Lake Banoles, which is probably endemic species). Our study also shows that the centric diatom flora of the waters is to a large extent unexplored. Investigation of protected areas may lead to the record of species that are new for that particular area or even for science. This fact also directs the attention to the special role of protected areas in biodiversity conservation.
