Sažetak
The paper addresses the problem of the acquisition of the English articles by speakers of Croatian. Acquisition of the English articles is, according to literature, as well as the author’ s experience, one of the greatest and most persistent problems in learning English. The author analyses the results of a study based on a questionnaire filled by 30 fourth- year students of English at the Department of English in Zagreb. The students were required to give their reflections upon the problems they have using the articles, and the problems that non-native speakers in general have using the English articles. The respondents were also enquired whether they encounter more problems producing translations or essays. The following question was if the Croatian text can help them in deciding which articles to use in the English translation, and if the answer is ‘ yes’ , how it can help. The last question elicited their suggestions concerning enhancing university students’ perception and better use of the English articles.
