Nowadays, there is an increasing interest in unmanned machining systems or intelligent machining systems, which are based on the application of sensors for monitoring the cutting process. Among others, cutting force sensors are particularly promising for this purpose. Nevertheless, commercially available cutting force sensors for milling are only able to measure the resultant cutting force and their frequency bandwith is limited. In this work, the development of a new rotating dynamometer able to measure the forces acting at each cutting edge separately and with good dynamic characteristics is presented. Firstly, the design of the "intelligent cutter", composed of a telemetry system, a cutter body and integrated 3D force sensors for each cutting edge, is shown. In order to evaluate the characteristics of the new sensor, a simplified prototype composed of one sensor was compared to a plate dynamometer. Static characteristics of the prototype were evaluated by performing static calibration, while dynamic performances were estimated by pulse tests. Cutting tests simulating interrupted cutting conditions were also carried out. Static and dynamic disturbances were identified, and some approaches for design optimization and signal correction were proposed.
