Sažetak
Recent studies (Hammarberg, 2001) show that both native and non-native languages known to the speaker can influence third or additional language acquisition and use. However, the direction and extent of the influence and roles different languages can play in third language production are claimed to be conditioned by numerous factors. The case study that will be presented here is based on a corpus of audiotaped non-native production in English (L2) and Italian languages (L3) by three Croatian university students. Despite comparable proficiency in all three languages and the same testing conditions, the non-target production of three speakers seems to exhibit different patterns of native and non-native transfer and different strategies in coping with apparent gaps in non-native knowledge. An attempt will be made to define various types and roles of transfer and to account for differences in terms of participants' exposure and perception of distance between the three languages.
