Sažetak
The multicultural city of Pula (Croatia) is an area of mixed populations, traditions and cultures, which also represents a complex multilingual reality based on the use of various languages and idioms. The complex multiethnic and multilingual history is maintained until today and is examined in this article on the example of members of Italian and Albanian minority. The specific historical background of the Italian minority influences its present status and that is the reason why today Italian minority is considered the autochthonous minority. The Albanian minority is, on the contrary, considered quite a new minority, i.e. migrant community. Having in mind that the linguistic resources can be transformed into capital (economic and symbolic) and language can be used as a requisite for access to power and mobility within the society, the social status of members of specific minorities can depend on the status that is assigned to their specific languages. Consequently, this may result in asymmetries of social power, economic participation and integration of a specific community. Using the ethnographic approach with qualitative methodology (semi-structured interviews with members of Italian and Albanian minority in the city of Pula) the article examines the identification practices of members of respective minorities, communicative practices which are at play in specific settings, and whether the status (old/new minority) affects the integration (i.e. participation in social life and economic participation) of a minority within a specific host community. The article also investigates the role of Italian and Albanian language as a form of economic and cultural capital in all the processes mentioned above, having in mind that the differential prestige of linguistic varieties is closely related to the relative social status of their speakers.
