Sažetak
Although the profession of social work in Croatia has developed through the whole 20th century, the interest for the historical context and the influence of history on the contemporary social work is rather new. In the last five years of research, the history of social work developed in three directions: (1) definition and categorization of the historical periods that represent significant changes in social policy and social work through-out the 20th century in Croatia ; (2) impact of the significant individuals on the social work development and (3) impact of voluntary and professionals groups that conducted various forms of social work. Up to now, knowledge about the history of social work has given an insight into the progress achieved by the profession, from the first organized philanthropic actions to recognizable professional activities. It has also given an insight into the questions, dilemmas and problems that exist within the social work profession and persist through-out the 20th century. Above all, the research of the social work history has given us a lot of creative joy and significantly improved the perception of the professional identity and integrity. The key issues are relate to the understanding of (1) continuity of social activities and development of social work as profession in the discontinuity of social-political situation, (2) influence of the international processes and development on social work in Croatia and (3) role of gender in social work development. Another important issue that we are addressing is the research methodology and importance of different methodological approaches.
