Sažetak
The development of the typology of the new university library buildings can be followed trough three stages: the tripartite library of 19th century (reading room, offices for librarians, depos), the virtual university library (the impact of the development of the information technology in the 90-ties) and learning resource centres (the process of “new socialization” at the beginning of the 21st century). New contents as server rooms, scanner rooms, lab class, rooms for tele-conferences, rooms for individual work and rooms for group work become a part of the new library interior side by side with the standard reading rooms. It is clearly visible that the information technology challenged social surroundings and design programs. The information technology changed the design process and architecture in three phases. In the first phase, at the beginning of the 90-ties, the plans and elevations for the new buildings were drawn by computers in the same way as it was done before by hand. The experiments of that time included direct application of computer screen on façade such as video-wall which resulted in “the co- existence, but not understanding, of two media” - the hybrid form. In the second phase, at the turn of the century, the researchers started to investigate relationships between computers and architecture by using data bases as the generators of new spatial characteristics (space produced by editing data taken from characteristic of location, sedimented trough the time, and by editing data of human movement trajectory). In the third, most recent phase, the researchers started to investigate robotics in architecture. The main goal is the production of new shapes from different materials with aim to produce self-built, self- repairing and self-recycling building. The new “intelligent building” will track trajectory of human movements by sensors and “adapt shape, texture, light, sounds and heat to its presence” . The story begins with “nature as protocol, as an algorithm” . The vision, the creativity, and other standard design issues take on new forms.
