Sažetak
Airline industry has been and still is a very dynamic industry with especially high demand volatility. Though decades of hefty growth in international markets were in the 70s and 80s, some markets in the last 15 years have revealed that soaring demand is very much present. Altogether airline industry has shown remarkable long-term growth in comparison to other industries. Developed countries (US, Canada, Western Europe) have recorded highest growth rates between 1940s and 1970s with growth slowing down in the 1990s but still remaining double figured and well above other industries. Long term characteristic of airline industry, until recently, has been heavy regulation from the governments or various agencies making airline industry one of the most regulated industries. Starting form 1970s plans for deregulation were emerging and gradually relinquishing tight regulations, leaving business decision to be influenced more and more by market forces of supply and demand. Most recent initiative of this kind called “ Open skies” went into effect on March 30, 2008. In its essence it allows European airlines as well as the US airlines to fly freely to any destination in the US and the EU respectively, without restrictions on routs, prices and number of flights. This marks an enormous step toward the creation of single air transport market between the EU and the US with huge global impact bearing in mind that this two markets comprise 60 percent of the total world traffic (EU-US Open Skies in effect, 2008). As of 2005 the EU is made of 27 countries many of which are transition economies. Their history of air transport was mostly characterized by state owned airlines with relatively low domestic demand for air travel, for business or leisure activities alike. The aim of this article is to explore and account for major factors affecting supply and demand of passenger air travel with respect to transitional economies, especially bearing in mind recent deregulation initiatives and substantial growth of pure discount (no-frills) airlines.
